I summarize my conclusions about New Zealand as I move across the Tasman Sea to the island off Australia'a southeast coast, the home of the Tasmanian devil. A visit to the former prison in Port Arthur is a somber experience because of the ghosts of all the inmates that linger in the beautiful grounds. A recent-day massacre by a crazed individual only serves to heighten our uneasiness about the tragic site.
